Shama Joins the Global Community to Celebrate Earth Day 2026

On April 22, 2026, communities around the world came together under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” a call to action emphasizing the collective responsibility of individuals, communities, and institutions to protect the environment and secure a sustainable future. The Shama District in Ghana’s Western Region also participated in celebrations.

Through a vibrant and impactful Earth Day celebration held at Apo and Bentsir beaches, Shama joined the global movement through action.

Over 200 community members from Apo and Bentsir including fisherfolk, fish processors, youth groups, women, community leaders, and institutional representatives gathered for a large-scale beach clean-up exercise to commemorate the day.

This activity was preceded by a radio interview held a day earlier with representatives from the Integrated Action for Development Initiatives (IADI) and the Fisheries Commission, helping to extend the Earth Day message across the entire district.

Speaking at the event, key stakeholders emphasized the urgent need for collective action. Grace Ahenakwah, District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education; David Osei, representing the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission; and Issac Assefuah, representing the Fisheries Commission, highlighted:

  • The dangers of improper waste disposal
  • The direct link between environmental health and livelihoods
  • The critical role of mangroves in sustaining fish populations
  • The power of communities to protect and sustain their natural resources

A strong message emerged around behaviour change encouraging communities to avoid dumping waste in wetlands and adopt improved waste management practices.

The clean-up exercise on the main day resulted in a visibly cleaner coastline, but its impact went far beyond that. It also strengthened awareness of sustainable environmental practices; reinforced the connection between clean beaches and healthy fisheries ; and highlighted the role of communities in driving change

Notably, youth and women played a leading role, demonstrating their importance as agents of transformation within Shama.

Broader Initiative for Sustainable Change

This Earth Day event forms part of a larger initiative supported by Born Free USA through the Earth Synergy Initiative (esi), the implementing agency for a pilot project addressing the impact of plastic pollution on coastal ecosystems and wildlife. The initiative is Implemented by: esi and IADI and aligned with the Shama Regenerative Transition (SRT), another initiative that was launched in Shama in March 2026.

Looking Ahead

Running from March to October 2026, the pilot will focus on:

  • Reducing plastic pollution and promoting reuse
  • Keeping beaches clean and protecting sea turtles and coastal wildlife
  • Strengthening community ownership of conservation efforts
  • Identifying green and sustainable livelihood opportunities

Working closely with the District Assembly, traditional authorities, communities, and partners, the initiative aims to ensure that these efforts are not temporary but become the foundation for long-term transformation in Shama.
